Postgraduate Education in Pediatric Dentistry

Program Length and Number of Positions:
Certificate Program: A 24-month program commencing July 1 of each year. Three matched positions are available each year and four non-matched positions are available each year.M.S./Ph.D. Combined Program: Simultaneous enrollment in the certificate program and a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree program is available. In addition to the requirements for the certificate program, an original research project, thesis, and course work are required. The certificate in Pediatric Dentistry is awarded upon successful completion of the degree program.

University/Health Science-based certificate program with Children's Hospital affiliation.

Description:
The program in pediatric dentistry is designed to offer the advanced student a balanced curriculum in both didactic and clinical areas. Particular emphasis is placed on hospital dentistry, conscious sedation, interceptive orthodontics and special patient care. The program is administered by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry of the Dental School and is approved and accredited by the Council of Dental Education of the American Dental Association. Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student is awarded a certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meets the eligibility requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Curriculum:
The program offers a balanced curriculum of clinical and didactic material with the overall goal being to provide a broad base of knowledge in the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry. Considerable program time is devoted to clinical experience in routine restorative dentistry, behavior management, interceptive orthodontics, and dental treatment of the medically compromised. Hospital rotations of general anesthesia and pediatric medicine are also part of the curriculum.
Significant time is spent covering didactic material related to pediatric dentistry. In addition, a research project and teaching responsibilities are required components of the program.
Program Stipend and Tuition:
Program participants currently receive an annual stipend of $26,000 the first year and $26,000 the second year.

Admission Requirements:
Applicants must fulfill the following items to be considered for admission:
- DDS, DMD, or non-U.S. equivalent
- Dental and preprofessional education transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation
- Personal interview
- The TOEFL is required of applicants whose first language is not English.
